Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1 tbsp Granulated Sugar Adds sweetness to the dough; reduce for less sweetness.
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Provides structure; gluten-free flour can be used.
  • 1 packet Active Dry Yeast Leavens the dough for a light texture; instant yeast is a substitute.
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt Enhances flavor; use less if watching sodium.
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted Butter Enriches the dough; can be swapped with olive oil.
  • 1 large Egg Yolk Adds richness and structure; a flax egg is suitable for vegan options.
For the Toppings
  • 1 tsp Dried Oregano Adds classic Italian flavor; Italian seasoning works as a substitute.
  • 1 tsp Garlic Salt Intensifies the savory taste; fresh minced garlic is a great alternative.
  • 2 cups Mozzarella Cheese Primary cheese for that gooey texture; try provolone or Monterey Jack for variety.
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese Gives a savory depth; nutritional yeast is an excellent dairy-free option.
For Serving
  • 1 cup Marinara Sauce Perfect for dipping; consider ranch or barbecue sauce for a twist.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Oven

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine the active dry yeast with half of the warm water (about 110°F) and let it foam for 5 minutes. In a mixing bowl, combine melted unsalted butter, granulated sugar, kosher salt, and the remaining warm water, followed by the egg yolk and the foamy yeast mixture. Gradually add all-purpose flour until just combined, watching for a soft dough to form.
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with a bit of melted butter. Transfer the dough into the dish, spreading it evenly with your hands. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm area for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 350°F.
  3. Once the dough has risen, carefully uncover it and brush the surface with more melted butter. Sprinkle a generous layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top. Then, season with garlic salt and dried oregano.
  4. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 28 to 31 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and the edges are golden brown. Once done, remove the dish from the oven and let the cheese sticks cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving with marinara sauce.
