Ingredients

For the Patties
  • 1 pound ground turkey A lean protein base; opt for ground chicken for a slight variation.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Adds structure to your burgers; crushed crackers or oats can be great substitutes.
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Enhances moisture and flavor; feel free to skip for a dairy-free option.
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion Offers a crunchy sweetness; shallots or green onions work well too.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil Keeps the patties moist; any neutral oil will do!
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder Delivers that spicy kick that defines your Spicy Southwest Turkey Burgers.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin Adds a warm, earthy depth to the mix.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Infuses a rich savory note.
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika Enhances color and gives a hint of sweetness.
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Adjust according to your spice preference—more for the heat lovers!
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt A crucial flavor enhancer for all ingredients.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Offers just a hint of sharpness.
  • 1 large egg Binds everything together and adds moisture.
For the Assembly
  • 4 whole whole wheat hamburger buns Great for a hearty burger; gluten-free buns can also be used.

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions for Spicy Southwest Turkey Burgers
  1. Begin by preheating your grill or stovetop grill pan to medium-high heat, approximately 375°F. This ensures your burgers will receive a beautiful sear while locking in juiciness.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and finely chopped red onion. Pour in the olive oil and mix everything well.
  3. Sprinkle chili powder, ground cumin, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper into the bowl. Use your hands to mix the spices thoroughly into the turkey blend.
  4. Crack the egg into the seasoned turkey mixture and combine everything until well blended.
  5. Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions and gently shape them into patties about 3/4 inch thick.
  6. Place the formed patties on the preheated grill. Grill them for about 5-6 minutes on each side.
  7. While the turkey patties are grilling, slice your whole wheat hamburger buns in half and toast them on the grill for 1-2 minutes.
  8. To assemble your burgers, spread salsa on the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a turkey patty on top, add sliced avocado and sprinkle with cilantro, and cap it off with the top half of the bun.
  9. Serve the assembled Spicy Southwest Turkey Burgers immediately with your favorite side dishes.

Notes

Use a meat thermometer to ensure your turkey burgers reach an internal temperature of 165°F. Avoid overmixing for a tender patty. Allow the burger mixture to rest in the fridge for 15-30 minutes for better flavor and handling.
