Ingredients

For the Onion Rings
  • 2 small White Onions Provides a sweet and mild onion flavor; substitute with yellow onions for a stronger taste.
  • 7 oz Shredded Parmesan Cheese Adds a rich, nutty flavor; can be replaced with any hard cheese.
  • 1.5 tbsp Olive Oil Used for roasting and cooking; canola or vegetable oil serves as a good substitute.
  • Salt To taste
  • Garlic Powder To taste
  • Paprika To taste
For the Filling
  • 1 lb Ground Meat Acts as the protein base; substitute with turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • 1/4 cup Low Sodium Chicken Broth Adds moisture and flavor; vegetable or beef broth can be used instead.
  • 6 slices American Cheese Melts well for creaminess; substitutes like cheddar or mozzarella can also be used.
  • 6 slices Ham Offers a savory, salty flavor; consider turkey ham for a lighter version.
  • 1/3 cup Pickles Adds crunch and acidity; jalapeños can be used for heat or omitted.

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Medium skillet
  • Parchment paper
  • Wooden spoon

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a 12x17 inch baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Spread shredded Parmesan cheese evenly on the baking sheet. Arrange sliced onion rings side by side, brush with olive oil, and season with salt, garlic powder, and paprika. Bake for 18-20 minutes, rotating halfway, until golden brown and crispy.
  3. In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 1 pound of ground meat. Stir in seasonings and 1/4 cup of low sodium chicken broth, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Once onion rings cool, flip each over. Layer with ham and slices of American cheese, then spread the cooked ground meat mixture and top with sliced pickles. Roll each ring tightly, seam side down.
  5. Arrange the rolled onion rings back on the baking sheet and bake for an additional 7-10 minutes until heated through and cheese is melted.
